'Chicago Tribune' sues U of Illinois for violation of FOIA

Contents

June 17, 2009 The 'Chicago Tribune' is suing the University of Illinois for not responding according to the Freedom of Information Act for a request to obtain grades and standardized test scores of several U of I students after suspicion that such students were admitted through personal connections.

[edit] FOIA request denied

The FOIA request from the Chicago newspaper of the university asked for access to records of hundreds of applicants that the newspaper suggests were admitted mostly through the recommendations of politicians, lobbyists and other well-connected people.[1]

The U of I will not release this information without the consent of the students or their parents.

"We respect the privacy of the students, but we don't believe providing this information violates their privacy. It sheds light on the issue," Tribune Editor Gerould Kern said in a Wednesday article by reporter Antonio Olivo.[2]
