Alaska state legislators earn $50,400/year.[2] Legislators also receive a per diem of $189 or $234 /day depending on the time of year tied to federal rate. Legislators who reside in the Capitol area receive 75% of the federal rate.[2]

According to 2008 Census data, the state of Alaska and local governments in the state employed a total of 62,644 people.[7] Of those employees, 48,124 were full-time employees receiving a net pay of $224,039,245 per month and 14,520 were part-time employees paid $15,701,767 per month.[7] More than 50% of those employees, or 31,622 employees, were in education or higher education.[7]

The total number of state and local government employees was up slightly from the 61,483 employees of state and local government according to the 2007 Census data.[8]

Most state employees work a 37.5 hour workweek, with standard hours of 8:00 am—4:30 pm, Monday through Friday.[9]

Alaska allows each school district to bargain with its teachers to establish a compensation package. Districts typically set a pay scale with years of experience and education levels combining to determine each teacher's salary. [10]

Pension

Full-time and part-time employees of the Department of Education and Early Development and the Department of Labor and Workforce Development whose positions require they hold a valid Alaska Teaching Certificate are required to be members of TRS. TRS benefits are paid from the Teachers' Retirement Fund, which consists of employee and employer contributions and investment earnings.
