According to the BRPD's website, "The mission of the Baton Rouge Police Department is to serve with the Baton Rouge community to prevent crime and to promote the safety and well-being of all."[1]
The Baton Rouge Police Department has been accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) since 1996. [2]

The only appointed position in the department is that of Chief of Police. The appointment is made by the current mayor of Baton Rouge.[3] The mayor is also who the Chief of Police reports to.

The last reported budget for the Police Department was $46 million in 2002.[3] The East Baton Rouge Parish Metropolitan Council is who finalized the departments budget. Currently they do not post an financial data on their website.[4]

In 2008 two documents were revealed, as pictured below, that caused controversy for the BRPD. The first was a Police Union Memo which stated:
"Effective March 14, 2008 you will no longer be required to write tickets or arrest 8 people in a regular work week because of fears from past disciplinary action."
The other article, a fax from a police officer, asked the police be assigned to drive through high income areas for good publicity in conjunction with a "gift" to the department.
