Basic Facts

The Bloomfield Hills School District is located in Oakland County, Michigan. According to a report from the Michigan Dept. of Education, it served 5,867 students for the 2006-07 school year and was the 55th largest public school district in Michigan.[1]

Freedom of Information

The district came under fire for releasing the e-mail addresses of district parents in response to an open records request for them. Lists complied by a public body are generally public records, which is why they were released. The district is now promising that they will not release such lists in the future. A Michigan Supreme Court decision in July, 2008 ruled that the addresses and phone numbers of district employees are not subject to disclosure. That decision is now being used by the district to say that parent addresses and phone numbers are not subject to disclosure either. [1]

The complaints have spurred some to ask nationally: "Is there such a thing as 'FOIA abuse'"? [2]
