Academic Performance

The Alabama Department of Education's Student Assessment Program tests students K – 12 in core content areas of reading, mathematics, language, and science, including specialist populations such as special education students and limited English proficient students. [10]

The Alabama Accountability Program sets Annual Measurable Objectives for schools and school systems. To achieve Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) toward system goals, schools must score at or above the set objectives and have at least a 95% participation rate amongst students. Students are tested in reading and mathematics. A school that misses AYP in the same area for two consecutive years is identified as In Improvement.[11]

AYP results for the State of Alabama and Bullock County Schools are noted below.[12] Results for individual schools within each district can be accessed through the Accountability Reporting Query System on the Alabama State Department of Education website.[13]

School Choice

Schools that do not meet State goals for student achievement are required to provide parents with the option of sending their child to another public school that is not also recognized as In Improvement, per the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB).[14]

Bullock County High School (BCHS) did not make Adequate Yearly Progress for the 2009-2010 academic year, entering Year 1 of School Improvement, and was therefore required to offer school choice for the 2010-2011 academic year per the NCLB Act. As there are no higher performing schools to which students can transfer in the district, BCHS is offering Supplemental Educational Services (SES), free tutoring for all students, with priority being given to low-income, low-achieving students.

The South Highlands Middle School entered Year 2 of School Improvement in 2010-2011. Free tutoring programs are being offered to students who attend this school.[15]

Unions

The Alabama Education Association (AEA) is the teachers union for the State of Alabama.[16] The AEA is affiliated with the National Education Association (NEA).[17]
