November 6th, 20009. An alderman of Chicago, Isaac Carothers, is said to have helped the FBI pursue charges of bribery against a local businessman, Wafeek Aiyash. Working as an informant on behalf of the FBI, Carothers is alleged to have been approached and bribed by Aiyash. [1]

[edit] Past charges

Carothers helped the FBI as apart of an agreement between the two parties. In exchange for Carothers help in exposing local corruption, the FBI has agreed to reduce past corruption charges against him. In 2006, Carothers was charged for accepting a $40,000 bribe from a local developer who was pursuing city approval for a residential development.[2]

In addition, Carothers later admitted in 2007 to having had received around $45,000 from Aiyash in exchange for his support of a proposal that granted Aiyash permission to develop in a certain area.[3]

[edit] Aiyash bribery

As an informant for the FBI, Carothers wore a hidden microphone and video camera while he communicated with Aiyash. During their meetings between May and September of 2008, Carothers is alleged to have been offered two bribes of $9,000. The bribes were for buying Carothers' support for opening restaurants owned by Aiyash at O'Hare and Midway airports. If the contracts were approved, Aiyash is said to have promised to give tens of thousands of more dollars to Carothers.[4]

[edit] Larger problem

The bribery case against Aiyash comes in the backdrop of long standing allegations that the contract granting process for Chicago airports is riddled with corruption. [5]
