Citizens for Sunshine
The organization was started in 2007 by Brian Bardwell, a former newspaper reporter with a passion for public records. Frustrated by persistent violations of state law and empowered by recently enacted legislation, Bardwell began filing pro se lawsuits against police departments and other public offices who refused to release records he had requested.
Most notably, Bardwell filed a lawsuit against Marc Dann, then the attorney general of Ohio, for access to e-mails between Dann and his scheduler, with whom he was believed to be carrying on an extramarital affair. That lawsuit has not been resolved; most recently, a magistrate ruled in favor of Bardwell in some matters and for the attorney general's office on others. The attorney general's office has appealed those findings.
