Cook County FOIA

In March of 2010, Sunshine Review sent Illinois Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests to all 102 counties in Illinois. We focused on 10 of the most populous counties in the state.

Cook County did request an extension, which is 5 additional days under Illinois law. Sunshine Review, however, granted an additional 10 days. Ultimately, because of difficulties communicating, it took over a month to receive the information. The county asked for $5.40 to cover the costs of fulfilling the request.

The county did not respond to the request in full. It only sent information since 2008, while Sunshine Review requested information since 2005. It also only sent two of the 9 items we requested. The information the county did not disclose includes its membership to taxpayer-funded lobbying associations.

The county was very helpful and stayed in constant communication.
