[edit] County must work; city, state can rest

"The city of Wichita figures that giving employees a paid holiday Friday -- the day after Christmas -- costs about $65,000.

City officials say it's a justifiable expense, buffered by about $35,000 in savings from lower utility costs from public facilities being closed for the day.

State employees also will be off an extra day with pay on Friday.

But for Sedgwick County employees, the day after Christmas will be another work day. County Manager William Buchanan has cited the cost of giving a paid holiday as one reason that county employees will work that day, county spokeswoman Amanda Matthews said."
