Beginning January 1, 2010 all state agencies in Washington will be required to preserve their electronic public records in accordance with the Washington Public Records Act. Board members of the Coupeville District have expressed concern that they will be unable to comply with the law, and suggest that it is an unreasonable law. "There is a point of common sense that is being lost," board president Kathleen Anderson said. "Anderson said she understands the need to save records and make them available to the public, but the expense to small school districts is unreasonable and onerous. 'It's ridiculous,' she said." Jerry Handfield, state archivist for Washington State Archives says that worries from public officials is common, but unfounded. He points out that "the task shouldn't be all that daunting because the new rules are not really new at all. Rather, they clarify state public-records laws that have been in effect since 1957." [1]
