[edit] DPS appeals ruling over records access

On August 18, the Texas Department of Public Safety appealed the ruling of state District Judge Scott Jenkis that the agency had to release travel documents from Governor Rick Perry's security detail.[1]

Three newspapers had filed the request last year under the Texas Public Information Act, seeking the information from the DPS troopers that accompany Perry. Attorney General Greg Abbott's office refused to release the information, saying it would compromise the safety of the governor.

Lawyers for the newspapers stated in court that state law makes it clear that the vouchers are public information, and thus must be released. On August 1, Judge Jenkins agreed with them, ruling that the information had to released. The DPS is appealing.
