David McHam

David McHam is a journalist and First Amendment advocate who is a faculty member of the University of Houston. He is the author of the 1972 book Law and the Media in Texas and teaches writing and communications law in the university's Jack J. Valenti School of Communication.[1]

McHam was named the outstanding journalism teacher in the nation by the Society of Professional Journalists in 1994. He has previously taught at Baylor University (1961-74), Southern Methodist University (1974-98), and at the University of Texas at Arlington (1998-2001).[2]

He began his career in journalism at The Spartanburg (S.C.) Herald while still in high school. He has worked at The Waco News-Tribune, the now-defunct Houston Post and the now-closed Dallas Times Herald.[3]

He recieved his undergraduate degree from Baylor University and his master's degree from Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism.[4]
