[edit] Audit
In an audit of the 2007-2008 school year, it was revealed that the school district was forced to return $650,000 in federal funds for failing to file the correct paperwork on time. The district also failed to obey federal regulations about cash surpluses in district bank accounts, requiring an additional return of $81,360, totaling $740,032 in federal refunds.[5] It has been reported that the funds will be made up through local tax increases.
Investigations by the local newspaper have also revealed $3.1 million spent on consultants (including relatives of politicians), hundreds of thousands of dollars on airlines and hotels, art work and four used cars.[5] The four cars were supposed to be prizes for students, but only one student was registered as an owner of the car.[5]
