Everett School District, Washington
From Sunshine Review
The Everett School District is one of 298 school districts in Washington.[edit] Underground newspaper
Student journalists at Cascade High School (in the Everett district) started an underground newspaper called the "Free Stehekin". The paper came under investigation by the school, and Kay Powers, a teacher advising the students writing the underground paper, was suspended and then terminated.[1]
In May 2008, the local teacher's union requested records from the school district to learn how a decision was made to install a secret camera in Kay Power's classroom. The school district declined to provide the records that had been requested, and the union sued. On September 16, 2009, Snohomish County Superior Court judge David Kurtz ruled that the district is required under the Washington Public Records Act to furnish the records that had been requested.[2]
Through August 2008, the district had spent about $140,000 on the lawsuit.[1]
