The school board controls school property, establishes, organizes, and operates the schools of the district, including: establishing schools, adopting enrollment plans, providing for school elimination and consolidation, cooperating with school boards of adjoining districts in maintaining schools, maintaining the school year schedule and other more specific duties as outlined in the Florida statute. [9]

It operates, controls and supervises the district's public schools as well as determines the rate of school district taxes, with the option of two or more school districts operating and financing educational programs together.

[edit] Teacher contracts

Florida State University officials and United Faculty of Florida recently agreed upon the 2009-2011 school year collective bargaining agreement. According to the agreement teacher base pay is $29,000. For teachers with a Master's degree $1,000 is added; Education Specialists receive $2,000 extra; and teachers with Doctorates receive $3,000 extra. Pay increases are also based on promotions and years of experience.[10]

On May 12, 2009, district officials approved a $14,542,720.68 total school budget for the 2009-10 school year. The United Faculty of Florida - Florida State University Chapter is the teacher's union for this school district.[16] The statewide teachers union is the Florida Education Association.[17]

Florida State University Schools has one charter school: Pembroke Pines/FSUS Charter Elementary School. The state of Florida has two enrollment policies: intradistrict and interdistrict policies. In other words, students can transfer to other schools within and outside of the district.[18]
