[edit] Education
In September 2009 the Government Accountability Office released a report that cited states that might be susceptible to the misuse of Title I federal stimulus funds. "High-risk states" including Arkansas, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Idaho, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, and Oklahoma.[26][27]
- In Florida, Broward County rehired 100 of the 400 teachers it had laid off earlier this year thanks to stimulus funds.[28]
- A total of 8 public universities in Florida have been awarded $33.7 million in federal stimulus funds. The University of Florida received $19.1 million, Florida State University received $7.9 million, the university of Central Florida received $3 million, USF received $2.4 million and Florida A&M University received $257,306.[29]
[edit] Energy
The energy efficiency block grant is used to fun the "green government grant program." Approximately 60% of the state of Florida's Energy Program will be allocated to non-entitlement cities and counties. Specifically $14.1 million will be used for energy efficient grants in small communities and $9.4 million will be used for the solar rebate program.[30]
[edit] Transportation
The Florida Department of Transportation received approximately:[31]
- $70 million for airport projects
- $1.35 billion for highway and bridge projects
- $316 million for transit grants
Approximately 30% of the highway and bridge funds were allocated to local projects.
However, in order to qualify for the funds, Florida must meet federal requirements. For example, transit, rail and airport projects must be coordinated with the relevant operating agency -MPO or FDOT. Another requirement includes the use of American iron, steel and manufactured goods, except in certain instances. Additionally, an environmental impact report must be completed.[31]
[edit] Cuts in funding
Approximately $8 billion in federal stimulus funding is being cut from the national total.[32]
