[edit] Academic Performance

In the 2008-09 academic year, the district did not meet Annual Yearly Progress criteria established by the Alaska Department of Education & Early Development.[1] The district was placed on AYP Level 4[1], which requires corrective action be taken in addition to continued implementation of the school improvement plan.[6]

In the district, of the students in grades 3-10 tested during the 2008-09 academic year, 79% of students were proficient in language arts and 62% were proficient in mathematics.[1]

[edit] School choice

The district is home to Galena Interior Learning Academy, known as GILA, which is a statewide boarding school for grade 9 -12 students that are seeking another choice and is Alaska’s longest operating residential secondary vocational school.[7]

The district also offers homeschool support through the Interior Distance Education of Alaska (IDEA) program.[8]

[edit] Lobbying

The district is a member of the Association of Alaska School Boards.[9] The AASB states on its website that it promotes pro-education legislation and to protect the principle of local control of public education, with its efforts led by its Executive Director.[10] The AASB also issues a Legislative Handbook to members of its Legislative Network and publishes a Legislative Bulletin.[11][12] The AASB is also an affiliate of the National School Boards Association and its Federal Relations Network, which addresses the legislative process at a national level.[13][14]
