Littleton has been an educator for 30 years after she earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Alabama and her graduate degree from Florida State University. She has worked in middle schools and high schools.
Littleton also worked as an educational consultant with the small and rural districts surrounding Bay County. She assisted schools in meeting the Florida standards of accountability.
She has served as president of Bay Arts Alliance, and as a Visual Arts Center board member.
Littleton's husband is former city commissioner, A.C. Littleton, Jr. She is the mother of three daughters, Gayle, Amy and Gina. Her family includes son-in-law Andrew and grandsons Preston and William.[1]
[edit] Book banning
In early June 2008, the district voted 3-2 to ban The Fighting Ground (Lippincott, 1984) by Newbery Award-winning author Avi from all elementary library shelves in Florida’s Bay District Schools. Littleton voted against the ban.
A review committee’s recommendation said that its language wasn’t “lewd,” Littleton pointed out during this time. A parent had complained about profanities in the book, which is about a 13-year-old boy during the Revolutionary War. Littleton says the instances were more of an expression of fright by soldiers.
In accordance to school board policy, the ban was only be in effect until June 30, the official end of the 2007-2008 school year.
“I’ve spent 30 years as a teacher and administrator fighting censorship,” says Littleton, who read the book and found it appropriate for its intended fourth-grade reading level. “Our job isn’t to find books that appeal to every child. Our job is to determine if they’re allowable.”
“If a child or parent is offended by a book, put it down and read another one," she added. [2]
