The school board controls school property, establishes, organizes, and operates the schools of the district, including: establishing schools, adopting enrollment plans, providing for school elimination and consolidation, cooperating with school boards of adjoining districts in maintaining schools, maintaining the school year schedule and other more specific duties as outlined in the Florida statute. It operates, controls and supervises the district's public schools as well as determines the rate of school district taxes, with the option of two or more school districts operating and financing educational programs together.

In the winter of 2008-2009, Glades County school teachers received a two percent increase in average salary. After the increase, the salary range for those with a bachelor's degree was from $34,000 to $55,000, whereas those with Masters degrees ranged from $35,500 to $57,400.[4] Since 2000, average salaries in the county (as well as across the state) have increase substantially, with Glades County teacher salaries raising from about $35,000 to $41,447, or an 18.48% increase.[5]

The most recently compiled budget report for Glades County school district finds its spending budget at $11,201,000, split up into four main categories:

- Teacher Salaries: $3,430,000
- Pupils: $675,000
- Total Support Services: $4,445,000

Glades County has one charter school in operation, Pemayetv Emahakv "Our Way School", which enrolls 166 students.[8] The school district's website and other associated sites fail to elaborate on any other efforts the county has taken to improve school choice.
