Gulf County School District is a school district in Florida. The school system has a total attendance of 1,988 students project for the 2009-2010 school year. The Florida Department of Education provides a list of past, current, and future school enrollment totals for each district.

The school board controls school property, establishes, organizes, and operates the schools of the district, including: establishing schools, adopting enrollment plans, providing for school elimination and consolidation, cooperating with school boards of adjoining districts in maintaining schools, maintaining the school year schedule and other more specific duties as outlined in the Florida statute. [5]

It operates, controls and supervises the district's public schools as well as determines the rate of school district taxes, with the option of two or more school districts operating and financing educational programs together. Gulf County Schools are under the direction of an elected school superintendent and a five member school board. Members are elected by the voters of their respective district and serve 4 year terms.

The superintendent of the district is Tim Wilder.[6]

In the spring of 2008, Gulf County school teachers received a 1.6% increase on their average salary. Those with bachelor's degrees now receive anywhere from $30,951 to $49,620.[7]

The total spending budget for the school district this past year was $19,407,000, roughly split into four sub-groupings for administrative purposes. Those are:

  • Instruction: $9,380,000
  • Teacher Salaries: $6,105,000
  • Pupils: $796,000
  • Total Support Services: $6,917,000

There are currently 2,179 students enrolled in the district.[8]

Gulf County teachers are members of the Gulf County Education Association, led by Jay Bidwell.[10] The GCEA conversely answers to the Florida Education Association, an umbrella organization meant to organize the smaller unions in the state. The FEA's total budget in 2008 was $20,133,842.[11]

The school district pays membership dues to the Florida School Boards Association, a taxpayer-funded lobbying association.[12]

The Gulf County school district does not hold any charter schools, and they fail to advertise any other voucher programs or other school choice programs that they participate in.
