Academic Performance
In the 2008-09 academic year, the district did not meet Annual Yearly Progress ("AYP") criteria established by the Alaska Department of Education & Early Development ("EED").[2] The district was placed on AYP Level 1[2], which is considered an alert and the district must prepare and implement a school plan and consult with the EED.[8] Grades 3-5 and 9-12, however, were found to have met AYP.[2]
In the district, of all students in grades 3 through 10 tested in the 2008-09 school year, 83% were proficient in language arts and 77% were proficient in mathematics.[2]
Each school also received a report card that evaluated whether the school met annual yearly progress goals.[9]

Lobbying
The district is a member of the Association of Alaska School Boards.[14] The AASB states on its website that it promotes pro-education legislation and to protect the principle of local control of public education, with its efforts led by its Executive Director.[15] The AASB also issues a Legislative Handbook to members of its Legislative Network and publishes a Legislative Bulletin.[16][17] The AASB is also an affiliate of the National School Boards Association and its Federal Relations Network, which addresses the legislative process at a national level.[18][19]
