[edit] School board
The school board controls school property, establishes, organizes, and operates the schools of the district, including: establishing schools, adopting enrollment plans, providing for school elimination and consolidation, cooperating with school boards of adjoining districts in maintaining schools, maintaining the school year schedule and other more specific duties as outlined in the Florida statute. [9]
It operates, controls and supervises the district's public schools as well as determines the rate of school district taxes, with the option of two or more school districts operating and financing educational programs together.
Below is a list of the school board members for 2009-2010:[10]

[edit] Superintendent dismissal
On August 27, 2009, the Hernando County School Board voted to end Superintendent Wayne Alexander's three-year contract nine months early. Wayne Alexander has been recently accused of nepotism, secretive efforts to find a new job, irresponsible budget recommendations and failing to oversee district staff.
Alexander's last day was Sept. 11, 2009 and he was paid an additional 30 days' worth of salary and benefits on that date.
"I will hold back my tears because what I really want to say is thank you to the four of you," Alexander said to the four board members in the room. "This has been a tremendous experience and I will miss all four of you."[11]
The Hernando County School's website added a survey to help in the search for a new superintendent of schools.
Currently, Sonya Jackson, is serving as the interim Superintendent of Schools.[12]

[edit] School Budget
The latest budget information for the 2009-2010 school year was released on September 15, 2009. The FY 2009-2010 Estimated Revenues for all funds (excluding other financing sources and transfers) is $209.26 million, a decrease of $1.7 million or .82% less than the FY 2008-2009.[13]
Total Florida Education Finance Program (FEFP), increased in FY 2009-2010 by approximately $5.1 million to $17,925,014,780. The District is receiving $774,608 more FEFP revenue than last year, which is due to ARRA or stimulus funds. The District will receive $7,556,321 in State Fiscal Stabilization Funds for K-12 Education and $32,591 for Workforce Education. Without stimulus funds the District’s funding would be down by almost $6.8 million from last year.[13]

[edit] Academic Performance
A recent 2009-2010 Tentative Budget submitted by former Superintendent of Schools, Wayne Alexander, acknowledges the academic achievements of FY 2008-2009. Wayne writes, "The District received a “B” grade under Florida’s State A+ Plan. Eight (8) elementary schools and two (2) middle schools earned an “A” in FY 2008-2009, which is two (2) more “A” grades at the elementary level as compared to the previous year. These results show outstanding improvement and reflect the strong commitment and effort of all staff to provide quality education to all students." [16]
