Jim Newberry was elected Mayor of Lexington, Kentucky on November 7, 2006, and was sworn into office on December 31, 2006. He defeated incumbent Teresa Isaac in his second attempt for political office. He previously had run for the Democratic nomination for the Sixth Congressional District of Kentucky in 1996. He came in fifth.
He graduated with an undergraduate and law degree from the University of Kentucky. After his education Newberry co-founded Newberry, Hargrove & Rambicure, in 1990 where he practiced law until 1998. After that he joined Wyatt, Tarrant & Combs.

In the past Newberry has served as the Executive Officer in the Office of Lieutenant Governor Brereton Jones, and as Acting Secretary of Kentucky’s Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Cabinet.
