Madison County School District is a school district in Florida. The school system has a total attendance of 2,680 students project for the 2009-2010 school year. The Florida Department of Education provides a list of past, current, and future school enrollment totals for each district.

The school board controls school property, establishes, organizes, and operates the schools of the district, including: establishing schools, adopting enrollment plans, providing for school elimination and consolidation, cooperating with school boards of adjoining districts in maintaining schools, maintaining the school year schedule and other more specific duties as outlined in the Florida statute. It operates, controls and supervises the district's public schools as well as determines the rate of school district taxes, with the option of two or more school districts operating and financing educational programs together.

The total spending budget for the district for the upcoming fiscal year is $26,152,000, a sum which is compiled by combining four other sub-groups of financial needs, which are:

  • Instruction: $11,947,000
  • Teacher Salaries: $7,318,000
  • Pupils: $648,000
  • Total Support Services: $9,539,000

There are currently 3,032 students enrolled in the district.[8]

The Madison County Education Association (MCEA) is the teacher's union for this school district. Their homepage describes their mission, stating "MADISON COUNTY EDUCATION ASSOCIATION has been serving the employees of the Madison District Schools for over thirty five years. We specialize in the securing and maintaining of Employee Benefits."[10]

George L. Williams currently serves as President.[11]

Madison County is working with Gadsden County to create a school choice plan. The district's website lists the goals of the plan as:[12]

  • Provide a variety of educational choices for all students;
  • Provide after school remediation opportunities for students currently attending low-performing schools;
  • Provide enhanced educational programs in under-enrolled schools;
  • To increase enrollment; and
  • To increase student achievement in all schools

The plan is slated to begin in the fall "with students attending the school of choice that best meets their needs and maximizes their opportunity to learn." Afterward, investigation are scheduled to look into under-selected and under-enrolled schools.
