Mark Labes
From Sunshine Review
Mark Labes was a 2009 candidate for Salina city commissioner. He is in the Air Force, working at Fort Riley, and studying business at Kansas State University.
Labes said he would have voted against a near-total public smoking ban, enacted by the city commissioners in January. The issue has come to the forefront of the campaign, as Labes explained, "The timing of the period when it was brought up made sure it was going to be an election issue regardless of who brought it up."[1]
Although he had planned to run for some time, Labes decided "because of recent events and lack of oversight by our current city commission, I decided to run now." A major issue pushing him was a recent initiative to build a new aquatic facility. "I think there was a better way to do it," he said. "Yes, we needed an upgraded pool, but did we need one as extravagant as they proposed? That's a matter of opinion, I guess."[2]
