Maywood is a city in Los Angeles County, California, United States. At 1.4 square miles, Maywood is the third-smallest incorporated city in Los Angeles County. [1] The population was about 30,034 on January 1, 2010, according to the California Department of Finance.[2] Various news accounts have said its official population reaches about 45,000 when illegal immigrants are counted.[3]

[edit] All public employee jobs outsourced

In an unprecedented move among California cities, the city plans to lay off almost all its employees, including its Police Department, effective July 1, 2010. With a large budget deficit, and no longer able to obtain insurance, the Maywood City Council stated it was left with no other option but to adopt this plan. [4] The City of Maywood will lose its workers compensation and commercial insurance due to its claims history over the last five years as reflected in 2005-2010 Loss Summary Statements. As a result, the City of Maywood will be unable to adminster a traditional staff. [5]

Some of the workforce was outsourced to Bell, which faced a large salary scandal shortly after.

[edit] FBI investigation

Maywood Councilman Felipe Aguirre is under investigation by the FBI for several of his city deals, including a $95,000 federal grant he and a business partner received in 2007. The grant was used refurbish the facade of a property, but it was Aguirre's business who received the grant even amongst concerns that there was a conflict of interest.[6]
