Mississippi House Bill 725 (2008)

House Bill 725, also known as the "Mississippi Taxpayer Transparency Act", was passed by the house on February 20, 2008, but died in committee. Sponsored by Rep. Toby Barker (R-Hattiesburg), the bill required the Department of Finance and Administration to create a website of state expenditures that would be available to the public at no cost. It was incorporated into HB 101, which was signed into law April 14, 2008.

The website outlined in HB 725 would be a single, searchable site including aggregate info on state revenue, along with expenditures of state funds and bond proceeds. It would include:

  • Name and principle location of entity/recipient
  • Amount of state funds expended
  • Type of transaction
  • Name of funding or expending agency
  • Description of funding action or expenditure

Information Not included

Anything considered confidential by state or federal law would not be disclosed on the site. Included among this is information on an individual's residence.

The bill was transfered to the senate February 20,2008, and died in committee March 18, 2008.
