Many city employees are part of the Kansas Public Employees Retirement System (KPERS), a defined-benefit pension plan. For 2010, the city spent $1,875,545 in KPERS contributions.[19]

Overland Park police participate in the City of Overland Park Police Department Retirement Plan (PDRP), a defined-benefit pension plan. The City of Overland Park paid $2,761,411 into the system in 2010. In that year, the city had accrued $8.2 million in unfunded liabilities for the PDRP.[19]

Firefighters are part of the Overland Park Fire Department Retirement Plan (OPFDRP), also a defined-benefit pension plan. The city spent $2,339,445 on the plan in 2010, and has of $11.5 million in unfunded liabilities for the plan.[19]
