Republican Mayors and Local Officials is a representative body of local and city-level official in the United States affiliated with the Republican Party. It, like it's converse - the National Conference of Democratic Mayors - concentrates its efforts on working within the U.S. Conference of Mayors and the National League of Cities.

[edit] Purpose

The aim of RMLO is to work with Republican at the local, state and federal level and members in RMLO to help them "express, develop and preserve the philosophy of the Republican Party"[1]. The RMLO works with Republican officials to help work out issues that affect government at the municipal level.

In paperwork provided to the IRS in 2000, the RMLO stated its purpose as:

"A. To enable Republican officials elected at the municipal level to express, develop and preserve the philosophy of the Republican Party in cities and towns across America;
B. To assist, where possible, in identifying Republican Mayors and Republican elected local officials; and
C. To consult and cooperate with each other, the President of the United States, officers of the Executive Branch and members of the Senate and House of Representatives, as well as Republican national, state and local leaders, to assist in the identification and resolution of significant issues of concern to the nation, particularly those affecting government at the municipal level."[2]

[edit] Leadership

Oklahoma City, Oklahoma Mayor Mick Cornett currently serves as the organization's President. Former Charlotte, North Carolina mayor Pat McCrory served as the organization's President from 2000 through at least 2005.

[edit] Membership

The groups membership is limited to Republican Mayors and Republican officials who are elected to city or local office in either partisan or non-partisan elections.[3] There is no membership fee. Members are asked to donate $25 per year to offset costs.

According to the group's now archived website, RMLO has approximately 750 members nationwide. [3] Tax forms filed with the IRS show $2,075 in dues collected in 2001, $1,525 in 2002 and nothing in 2005, leading to some media speculation that membership is actually far lower than 750.[4].

[edit] Notable Members

Pat McCrory, Mayor of Charlotte, North Carolina, has campaigned for Bush-Cheney, was a member of President Bush's Homeland Security Advisory Council, and chairs the U.S. Conference of Mayors' environment committee. [5] He was elected president of RMLO in 2000.[6]
