[edit] Robert Warner: Case of the not-so-public hearing cracked

"The city held its annual public hearing giving liquor establishments who aren't in full compliance with city laws -- including owing back city taxes -- an opportunity to comment on their situations.

The hearing precedes any action the city may take to report the scofflaws to the Michigan Liquor Control Commission. Presumably, a bad mark from the city could interfere with renewal of a liquor license.

The Enquirer was told before the meeting that a list of the establishments subject to the hearing would not be made readily available. City Clerk Deidre Laser told Eric Greene, our local news editor, that we would have to file a request for the document under the Freedom of Information Act."
