In December of 2010, there was a controversy over then Council member Rob McWilliams secretly recording closed door meetings. Upon finding out, Mayor Del Jurney sought to remove McWilliams from the council.[12] Before his petition for removal hearings could be heard, McWilliams resigned from the council.[13]

The police department budget for 2011-2012 is $11,222,779 and the fire department's budget is $8,973,779. Salary and benefit costs for the police department is $8,135,538 and $7,169,294 for the fire department.[17]
A Roswell Police Officer and son of Chaves County Sheriff Rob Coon was fired for attempting to buy Bronkaid (an ephedrine product used to make meth) with another person's ID. Justin Coon's home was discovered to have many prescriptions of Ephedrine and painkillers not prescribed to him.[18]
