[edit] Spending controversy

The School Board proposed an item to it's meeting agenda without proper public notice to discuss making an agreement with the Country Club of Spartanburg so that district golf teams could play there. After discussions held largely in closed session, the district board decided to pay $325,000 to the Country Club. When this decision was publicized, community members were unhappy and managed to put the contract on indefinite hold.

This flap spurred State Representative Joey Millwood to sponsor House Bill 3537, which seeks to require school districts throughout the state to pay for random performance audits. [1]
