Saint Bernard Parish, Louisiana is one of sixty-four parishes in Louisiana. A parish, in Louisiana, is the equivalent of a county in other states. The parish seat is Chalmette, the largest city in the parish. As of 2000, its population was 67,229.
St. Bernard Parish has a council form of government, with seven district council members and a council president elected parish wide. Council members serve four-year terms. The parish government provides municipal services including water, and garbage collection. The parish also provides fire protection and other services and regulatory functions. There are no incorporated municipalities within the boundaries of St. Bernard Parish and as a result, the parish government is the governing authority for all of the parish.
