State and local school budget: this page focuses on bringing greater transparency to state and local education spending. Citizens have a vested interest in how their states’ school systems function, not only because of public education’s intrinsic importance but also because of its strong connection to a region’s prosperity (not to mention its state and local tax levels). As a baseline for research about each state, consider these state education highlight reports. Additionally, visit this map to compare your state against others by categories such as "K-12 Achievement" or "School Finance."

As it develops, this page will become a hub for links and data on school transparency. Using the list of states below, editors can collect links to basic education spending data, such as:

financial statements, budgets, and spending records published by school districts in each state
school employees' salaries in each state and district
the average amount of money spent on each pupil in a school district, and the average amount of tax dollars spent per-student in a state

Finding even more specific data and asking tough questions can help you probe deeper into education spending in your region. For example, statistics about

which school district in your state has the highest budget
the highest salary received by a teacher in your district
