Contents

This project is a sub-project for the Sunshine litigation project.

For example of a page after stage one please seeMark O. Stern v. Wheaton-Warrenville Community Unity School District 200

This project is designed to expand the stub articles we have already created. Major expansion should occur in the major categories that were established in the stub pages, including:

Important precedents
Background
Supporters of the FOIA request
Criticisms of the FOIA request
Ruling of the court
Associated Cases
As you expand these cases be sure to remove Court case stub and . Also, please check to confirm that the talk page has the template WF lawsuits.

[edit] Important precedents

This is the most important section as it is at the top of the page and is the first thing most of our readers will look for when they are searching our pages. I will also be extremely useful when we move on to stage 3 and begin to compare the cases across states. This section only needs a few bullet points referencing all the important aspects of the decisions of the court. Questions that should be answered in this section include: Did the case overturn any existing court rulings or laws? and Did the case clarify the existing laws in a new or unique way?. Again, this section should be brief and to the point.

[edit] Background

This section provides an opportunity to expand on the facts of the case. All you need to do is provide a temporal listing of the facts of the case in bullet format. Most of this information can be found in the court rulings.

[edit] Supporters and critiques of the FOIA request

These sections will be the most difficult to fill in and may not be included for many of the lawsuit pages. All that should be added in each section is a few lines of various groups or individuals who support or reject the request, and what they have said about it. Often, local freedom of information groups or the attorney general will take a stance on major FOIA litigation. Check for old news articles and the attorney general's web page for commentary on the case. If you are unable to find any information on this, please feel free to delete the headings.

[edit] Ruling of the court

This section is intended to elaborate on the actual ruling of the court and the precedents set by the ruling. A small paragraph detailing the points of the decision is needed. Also a few lines detailing the importance of the case and how it affects the FOIA laws of the state.

[edit] Associated cases

As you expand articles on major litigation, you'll find that any individual lawsuit incorporates information and rulings from a number of other lawsuits. This will become most apparent when you write out the ==Ruling of the court== section. This section is a place for you to provide a list of other court cases. All cases should be formatted as internal links with the full name of the case as the title.

Example: *John vs Jane

If the page for the case already exists, try to copy the case name as it is on the appropriate page. If the page does not exist, feel free to go to click on the red link and create a new stub page per Stage 1 of the project.

[edit] New categories

As you research the cases if you find that the case applies to either open meetings law, deliberative process exemptions, attorney-client privilege exemptions, personal privacy exemptions, lawsuits concerning the definition of public bodies and the applicability of open records law to private companies acting on the public's behalf, separation of powers exemptions or cases that predate Freedom of information laws (PreFOIA lawsuits) please add the following category respectively, in addition to the categories already present. Please note that many of the lawsuits may require more than one category.
