Tangipahoa Parish, Louisiana is one of sixty-four parishes in Louisiana. A parish, in Louisiana, is the equivalent of a county in other states. The parish seat is Amite. As of 2000, the population was 100,588. Tangipahoa comes from an Acolapissa word meaning "ear of corn" or "those who gather corn."
