The Pelican Institute for Public Policy is a non-profit research and education organization that conducts scholarly research and analysis of Louisiana public policy.[1]
[edit] Mission
The mission of the Institute "is to advance sound policies based on the principles of free enterprise, individual liberty, and limited government."[2] They aim to fulfill this though a variety of outlets including regularly published commentaries and reports, public forums, legislative outreach, and media outreach.
[edit] Projects
[edit] LA transparency legislation
The Pelican Institute currently is concentrating on analyzing the Louisiana_2008_Transparency_Legislation special session of the legislature. Another priority of the Pelican Institute is to analyze and make recommendations on the spending of the Louisiana state government, which will soon be published at LaTrac. [3]
[edit] Transparency pledge
One of the goals of the Institute is to increase transparency in Louisiana state government. To this end they invite legislators and others to sign their transparency pledge. Those signing the pledge say they will "Engage in full disclosure of all my spending decisions and make revenue and expenditure data as open, transparent, and publicly accessible as possible."[4]
[edit] Spend-o-meter
The Spend-o-meter is a constantly updating ticker reflecting state spending.[5]
[edit] Volunteers and staff
The Pelican Institute relies on voluntary support from individuals and private foundations and businesses. It does not accept government funding and does not conduct contract research. Their application as a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation is pending. The Staff and Board of Directors of the Pelican Institute are as follows:[6]

- President: Kevin Kane
