U of I publishes FOIA requests to website
From Sunshine Review
July 7, 2009 After questions regarding the University of Illinois' admission process, the University of Illinois Central Administration set up a website for formal information inquiries.[1]
[edit] Former litigation
The Chicago Tribune sued the University of Illinois for not responding to a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request that asked for grades and standardized test scores of several U of I students. There was suspicion that such students were admitted through personal connections to politicians, lobbyists and other well-connected people.
The U of I denied the request without the consent of the students or their parents.[2]
"We respect the privacy of the students, but we don't believe providing this information violates their privacy. It sheds light on the issue," Tribune Editor Gerould Kern said in a Wednesday article by reporter Antonio Olivo.[3]
[edit] New site
The new website will publish requests under the Illinois FOI Act, correspondence between the Office for the University Relations and the person who submitted the request, and the requested documents. The requested documents are for a fee.
The University will determine later this year whether to continue using or to expand the website.[1]
