Union County School District is a school district in Florida. The school system has a total attendance of 2,224 students project for the 2009-2010 school year. The Florida Department of Education provides a list of past, current, and future school enrollment totals for each district.

The school board controls school property, establishes, organizes, and operates the schools of the district, including: establishing schools, adopting enrollment plans, providing for school elimination and consolidation, cooperating with school boards of adjoining districts in maintaining schools, maintaining the school year schedule and other more specific duties as outlined in the Florida statute. [8]

It operates, controls and supervises the district's public schools as well as determines the rate of school district taxes, with the option of two or more school districts operating and financing educational programs together.

The Union County School District Superintendent in 2009 was Carlton Faulk.

In Fall 2008, Union County School and teacher union officials agreed on a new contract:[9]

  • Pay for teachers with a Bachelor's degree starts at $33,250 and peaks at $50,677
  • Pay for teachers with a Master's degree starts at $34,750 and peaks at $53,272
  • A 1.78% step and 2.5% for the top step

In Summer 2005, the pay range for teacher's with Bachelor's degrees was $28,000-$46,596.[10]

The most recent budget compiled states that the total spending budget for the district is $16,950,000, which is split roughly into four major segments:

  • Instruction: $9,310,000
  • Teacher Salaries: $5,781,000
  • Pupils: $609,000
  • Total Support Services: $5,895,000

In addition, the total student population amounts to 2,290.[11]

According to Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) in the 2008-09 school year only 17% of 3rd grade students scored below grade-level, however, 69% of 10th grade students scored below grade-level. In the 10th grade, the grade with highest percentage of below average scores, retained 12 students out of grand total of 176 students.[5]

No information available on the unions in the Union County School District. The statewide teachers union is the Florida Education Association.[13]

The school district pays membership dues to the Florida School Boards Association, a taxpayer-funded lobbying association.[14]

Union County School District is comprised of an adult education center, elementary, middle and high school, however the district does not have any charter school options.[15] The state of Florida has two enrollment policies: intradistrict and interdistrict policies. In other words, students can transfer to other schools within and outside of the district.[16]
