Academic Performance
The district did not meet Annual Yearly Progress standards established by the Alaska Department of Education and Early Development.[1] However, grades 3-5 and 9-12 did meet Annual Yearly Progress.[1] The district was placed at AYP Level 1, which acts as an alert and necessitates that the district develop a school plan.[10]
For the 2007-08 academic year, 86% of third through twelfth grade students in the district were proficient in language arts and 77% were proficient in mathematics.[11]
For the 2008-09 academic year, 87% of third through twelfth grade students in the district were proficient in language arts and 78% were proficient in mathematics.[1]

Lobbying
The district is a member of the Association of Alaska School Boards.[15] The AASB states on its website that it promotes pro-education legislation and to protect the principle of local control of public education, with its efforts led by its Executive Director.[16] The AASB also issues a Legislative Handbook to members of its Legislative Network and publishes a Legislative Bulletin.[17][18] The AASB is also an affiliate of the National School Boards Association and its Federal Relations Network, which addresses the legislative process at a national level.[19][20]
