The school board controls school property, establishes, organizes, and operates the schools of the district, including: establishing schools, adopting enrollment plans, providing for school elimination and consolidation, cooperating with school boards of adjoining districts in maintaining schools, maintaining the school year schedule and other more specific duties as outlined in the Florida statute. [7]
It operates, controls and supervises the district's public schools as well as determines the rate of school district taxes, with the option of two or more school districts operating and financing educational programs together.
The superintendent at Wakulla County School District in 2009 was David Miller. His term expires in 2012.[8]

In Fall 2008, Wakulla County School and teacher union officials agreed on a new contract:[9]
- Pay for teachers with a Bachelor's degree starts at $33,500 and peaks at $52,500
- Pay for teachers with a Master's degree starts at $35,700 and peaks at $54,700
- 0% increase
In Summer 2007, the pay range for teacher's with Bachelor's degrees was $33,500-$52,500[10], an increase from the Summer 2006 negotiated range of $33,000-$50,500.[11]
In the 2006-07 school year Wakulla County School District had a total of 298 classroom teachers. The student/teacher ratio was 16.9.[12]

In the 2006-07 school year the Wakulla County School District had approximately $41,015,000 in total revenue and $39,982,000 in total expenditures. The district, however, receives the majority of it's revenue, nearly 62%, from the state. Approximately 29% of total revenue is local and 9% is comprised of federal funds. The district spends 57% of its budget on instructional material and only 11% on student and staff support. The district spent a total of $2,768,000 on construction projects.[13]

The school district pays membership dues to the Florida School Boards Association, a taxpayer-funded lobbying association.[16]
[edit] School choice
Wakulla County School District is comprised of a minimum of 4 elementary, 2 middle and 1 high school. The district, however, does include one charter school - Wakulla Coast Charter School of Arts Science & Technology. The state of Florida has two enrollment policies: intradistrict and interdistrict policies. In other words, students can transfer to other schools within and outside of the district.[17]
