[edit] Lawsuits

In 2008, the Yorktown spent about $160,000 defending five lawsuits and bringing two others.

  • The Winery at St. George filed a $30 million lawsuit alleging corruption by town officials. It has spent $51,000 on legal fees related to this lawsuit.
  • The town adopted a Comprehensive Plan in 2006; in 2008, it spent $26,000 complying with rulings resulting from legal challenges to that plan.
  • Legal challenges around two group homes located in Yorktown cost the town $27,000 in legal fees in 2008.
  • A lawsuit filed by sunshine activist Susan Siegel in February 2008 after the town denied her request for documents under the New York Freedom of Information Law cost the town $6,000, and the town was required to provide the documents.

Councilman Matthew Metz, an attorney, said the town must defend all lawsuits against it vigorously and regardless of merit. "No one can control who sues the town, but we can make sure we protect the town's interests."[1]
