Academic Performance

In the 2008-09 academic year, the district did not meet Annual Yearly Progress criteria established by the Alaska Department of Education & Early Development.[1] The district was placed on AYP Level 4[1], which requires corrective action be taken.[10]

In the 2008-09 academic year, 40% of students third through twelfth grade students in the district were proficient in language arts and 31% were proficient in mathematics.[1] In the 2006-07 academic year, 33% of students third through twelfth grade students in the district were proficient in language arts and 32% were proficient in mathematics.[11]

Lobbying

The district is a member of the Association of Alaska School Boards.[12] The AASB states on its website that it promotes pro-education legislation and to protect the principle of local control of public education, with its efforts led by its Executive Director.[13] The AASB also issues a Legislative Handbook to members of its Legislative Network and publishes a Legislative Bulletin.[14][15] The AASB is also an affiliate of the National School Boards Association and its Federal Relations Network, which addresses the legislative process at a national level.[16][17]

Unions

The Yukon Flats Education Association represents certificated employees in the district with the exception of the Superintendent and any administrators who have opted to remove themselves from the teacher's bargaining unit and substitute teachers working less than 20 days per year.[9] The Negotiated Agreement between the Yukon Flats Education Association is valid from July 1, 2009 though June 30, 2012 and provides for a 5% salary increase each of those three years.[9] The salary schedules included in the negotiated agreement are as follows[9]:

2010-2011 $41,581 $79,834
