Given the available technology for making information open to the public, state legislators and agencies can, at relatively little expense, become more transparent in openly showing how they use taxpayer dollars. A first step toward transparency is launching and maintaining a database of state monetary allocations and expenditures. Although such a task may seem difficult, multiple states have already had great success and Model legislation for transparency in state government spending is available to guide efforts in this area.
