Clarke County School District, Georgia
From Sunshine Review
The Clarke County School District is a school district in Georgia.
[edit] Superintendent contract
A lawyer for the Clarke County Board of Education refused to release a copy of the superintendent's contract to the public upon a request from newspaper the Athens Banner-Herald. The district has been conducting a search for a new superintendent, and found one that they intend to hire, but will not allow his contract to be made public until after he has signed it.
"It's not a contract until he signs it, and the paper needs to understand that," school board lawyer Terrell Benton said. "And, they need to show some consideration for this man so he doesn't read about in the paper before he's even seen it."
Georgia Press Association attorney David Hudson disagrees, saying: "That's nonsense. Whatever document that exists is a public record whether it's signed or not." [1]
New Superintendent Philip Lanoue singed the document on Saturday, February 21, 2009, and the district released it to the public later that day. [2]
