Mission Statement

"The California First Amendment Coalition (CFAC) is a nonprofit public interest organization dedicated to advancing free speech and open-government rights. Since its founding in 1988, CFAC has been a crucial counterweight to the tendency, at all levels of government, toward greater secrecy and declining accountability."[1]

Open records lawsuit

On December 3, 2008 CFAC and MAPlight.org (a nonprofit that analyzes the relationship between campaign contributions by special-interest groups and how lawmakers vote) filed a joint lawsuit against the Legislative Counsel of California. The two groups filed open records requests for an electronic database containing information on bills and lawmakers' voting records. The information they request is already available on the Legislative Counsel's website, but in an individual text file format, which is functionally useless for aggregating data. Peter Scheer, executive director of the CFAC, "said he's puzzled by the agency's refusal to make the information available in electronic form". [2]
