Gaston is a town in Lexington County, South Carolina. As of the 2000 census, its population was 1,304.

Accusations of systematic abuse came to light in December 2008 partly as the result of the work of local businessman Mike Gantt, who began to believe there was a problem when his son -- recovering from brain surgery -- got a ticket for pulling into a handicapped parking spot at a convenience store in January 2007.

Gantt started asking for town records under the South Carolina Freedom of Information Act. He also started attending the monthly meetings of the city council. According to a local newspaper, "Soon, council meetings were packed with angry residents who pressed for answers about town expenses and videotaped the responses. Town leaders could not meet Gantt’s demands for records. Poole had few of them, and the town’s books had not been audited, as state law requires, for years."[1]
