The New Mexico Foundation for Open Government is an educational and charitable organization with a single mission--to help the general public, students, educators, public officials, media and legal professionals understand, obtain and exercise:
- Their First Amendment rights.
- Their rights and responsibilities under the New Mexico Open Meetings, Inspection of Public Records and Arrest Record Information Acts.
- Their rights under the federal Freedom of Information Act.
[edit] Notable Activism
Albuquerque private investigator Eric Griego filed suit with the state Taxation and Revenue Department in 2006, saying that the department had been withholding open records from him. With the help of lawyers from NMFOG the case was settled in 2008 for the record amount of $117,500 plus lawyers fees of $25,970. [1]
